I would like to begin this blog specifically as a place for my 7th grade language arts students to talk about language, what's correct and what's not, and where they see "real life" examples of language concepts happening in their everyday lives.
Please help us get started by giving a quick comment about why it's important to study language and to understand "the rules" of grammar and usage. Thanks for your help!
Jen,
ReplyDeleteI can see this being a very inviting way to get your students involved. It looks great and is very positive.
In terms of your question, I believe it is very important to study language and understand the rules of grammar and usage because we need to be able to thoughtfully and correctly communicate to get our ideas across to others. Also, if we don't use correct grammar and usage, our errors interfere with (distract from) the message. In addition, when we make errors in our writing, others may tend to think we are less educated and won't take our ideas as seriously. (Great question, by the way!)
Hey, I like how you have divided by period! Great idea!
ReplyDeleteThe cuestshun is so important? Grammer is a kee in well writing! I thunk long and hard on this one. Wood I want my students to write like i am writing write now absolutely not i either have the rong spelling rong punkuatashun or nun at all and check out this run on sendtence.
Okay, enough of that! I cannot write that way for long. As you can see from my example above, grammar, spelling, usage, mechanics, are all important in making the message clear. I feel poor grammar is a distraction to the true message. Also, quite frankly, using poor grammar does make one look unintelligent to the rest of society. Do you want to be interviewed on TV and say, "I ain't seen it for days." I don't think so! So, yes, grammar is the key.
I am completely unable to write like our students text but often have assignments turned in with text shorthand (is that even a "term"?). Very frustrating! Great Blog, love the separations by class period!
ReplyDeleteIntegrating grammar instruction into the writing and editing process allows students to see the relevance of grammar in their own writing, and make an immediate connection.
ReplyDeleteGood job on the new blog Jenn!
